1. Right away great Captain- Memories from a shore
After I ate I went outside to catch my air, and to walk off my drink. And I rolled tobacco, and watched as the smoke floated and magically like you left me. I made a firm fist and pissed, I thought it brilliant, to throw my hand into the door. I knew I would have to admit that I was wrong. I decided to not talk no more.
2. Bright Eyes - Hot Knives
The Wife forgave the Mistress for she only entertained. The pain was gone the instant she cleared her throat to speak her name, said, "Both of us must suffer from the same unending ache.”
3. Bon Iver - Blood Bank
Well, I met you at the blood bank, we were looking at the bags. Wondering if any of the colors, matched any of the names we knew on the tags. You said, see look that's yours, stacked on top with your brother’s, see how they resemble one another, even in their plastic little covers.
4. Maritime - King of Doves
Angel and Ida, asleep by the pool again, trying to chase the day away. She always wore red shoes, so I wore a matching tie, and everyone thought that we were a pair.
5. Radical Face - Mountains
I was just a boy. My father seemed a mountain then, with a voice that could shake the seas. My mother's ghost hung across his shoulders, and he said she was still watching over me.
6. Beirut - East Harlem
Another rose wilts in East Harlem, and uptown downtown a thousand miles between us. She's waiting for the night to fall, let it fall, I'll never make it in time.
7. Decemberists - The Hazards of Love 4
Margaret arrayed the rocks around the hull before it was sinking. A million stones, a million bones, a million holes within the chinking. And painting rings around your eyes these peppered holes so filled with crying. A whisper weighed upon the tattered down where you and I were lying.
8. The Good Life - Always a bridesmaid
In a pile of unpaid bills, there’s a letter sent from Philadelphia. In a familiar hand, she hasn't opened it just yet, there’s no telling what is says.
9. Iron and Wine - Sodom South Georgia
Papa died smiling, wide as the ring of a bell. Gone all star white, small as a wish in a well. And Sodom, South Georgia, woke like a tree full of bees, buried in Christmas, bows, and a blanket of weeds.
10. Joanna Newsom - Jack Rabbits
I was tired of being drunk. My face cracked like a joke. So I swung through here like a brace of jackrabbits, with their necks all broke.
11. The Mountain Goats - Dinu Lipatti’s Bones
We stank of hair dye and ammonia. We sealed ourselves away from view. You were looking at the void and seldom blinking. The best that I could do, was to train my eyes on you.
12. The Weakerthans - Hospital Vespers
Doctors played your dosage like a card-trick. They scrabbled down the hallways yelling, "Yahtzee!" I brought books on Hopper, and the Arctic, something called "The Politics of Lonely,” a toothbrush and a quick-pick with the plus. You tried not to roll your sunken eyes. You said, "Hey can you help me, I can't reach it?” And pointed at the camera in the ceiling. I climbed up, blocked it so they couldn't see. I turned to find you out of bed and kneeling. Before the nurses came, took you away, I stood there on a chair and watched you pray.
That last one, it's a little long. It's one of my favorite pieces ever written. As a song or a poem or a short story, it gets me every time.
